Bibliotherapy is a process that involves employing books and other media to assist in addressing issues that children or adults face.

Clinical Bibliotherapy is utilized by mental health professionals to work with children or adults to address emotional and behavioral concerns.  Developmental Bibliotherapy is provided by educators to address typical milestones and healthy growth through the use of books or other media.

Some tips on employing Bibliotherapy:

  • Read the book before sharing it with a child.

  • Set up a quiet and comfortable environment for sharing the book.

  • Take time to enjoy the experience as you read the story.

  • Be mindful of the reactions of the child as the story is being read.
If a child becomes upset stop reading and address the concerns of the child. You may want to revisit the Healing Feelings book at a later time or not at all.
  • Take time to address any questions the child may have about the story.
  • Ask questions that facilitate comments (Open-ended questions) rather than focusing on yes or no questions. (Closed-ended questions). Some examples:
    - Can you tell me about the story we just read?
    - How did you feel as we read the story?
    - What did you learn as we read the story?

  • Most of all enjoy the experience of sharing story together.
